Evans tops podium at subdued Croatia event and pays tribute to Irish driver.
Elfyn moved into the lead of the 2023 FIA World Rally Championship after taking an emotional victory on Croatia Rally, sealing a 27-second win over rival Ott Tanak.
Following the death of Craig Breen in a pre-event testing accident, the WRC came together in Croatia to remember the much-liked Irish driver, with the event, round four of the championship, taking on a subdued feeling.
Elfyn had a strong opening day on Friday, setting a series of competitive times and staying out of trouble to hold second overnight, just 5.7 seconds adrift leader Thierry Neuville. However, on SS11, Neuville’s rally ended after colliding with a rock and Elfyn moved into the lead.
Despite a challenge from Tanak, Elfyn consolidated his top position and extended his lead during the final day. His first WRC victory on Tarmac, and the first win since Rally Finland in 2021, the result moves him to the top of the championship standing, level on points with team-mate Seb Ogier.
After a weekend of tributes, he and co-drier Scott Martin dedicated the final result to Breen.
The championship switches to gravel for the next round at Rally Portugal on 12-14 May.
