Elfyn's title hopes suffer damage in Italy

Welsh star Evans's car damaged on mountain tracks of WRC Rally Italia Sardegna.

It was another tough weekend on round five of the WRC at Rally Italia Sardegna. Elfyn was feeling confident after a podium in Portugal and moved into an early rally lead after setting fastest time on the first proper stage on Friday morning.

However, on the following test, the rough conditions of the Sardinian mountain tracks caused too much damage to the underside of the GR Yaris and he was forced to retire for the day.

Running first on the road in the loose gravel conditions on day two, Elfyn tried some different settings to gain as much information from the conditions for future events but suspension damage on the penultimate test of the day meant another early finish.

He returned on Sunday to secure three points on the Power Stage, but it was an event which failed to deliver the points needed to maintain a strong championship challenge. The action returns to gravel with Safari Rally Kenya on 23-26 June.
