Elfyn's podium charge halted by engine issue

Retirement ends rise up the standings in Acropolis Rally Greece.

Acropolis Rally Greece saw a frustrating end to a tough rally for Elfyn after an engine-related issue forced him into retirement on the final leg of the weekend.

The event lived up to its reputation as one of the toughest on the FIA World Rally Championship calendar with high temperatures, twisty stages and rocky roads all combining into an energy-sapping challenge.

Elfyn started slowly on the opening day, the loose gravel on top of the road meaning he didn’t have the optimum conditions and feeling with the car to push the leaders. But some overnight tweaks and a better running position on Saturday saw him battle back up the leaderboard into a position where he was battling for a podium position – setting up an exciting final day battle for third.

But it wasn’t to materialise as his Toyota GR Yaris developed a technical issue on route to the opening final-day stage, grounding his challenge. It was a frustrating result and, with no points from the event, dents his hopes of challenging for the championship title.
